Software Craftmanship

I recently finished reading The Pragmatic Programmer and Coder to Developer and started reading Software Craftsmanship. I liked The Pragmatic Programmer and Coder to Developer, even though many of the things they suggested were things I already knew I should be doing, but I'm loving Software Craftmanship. Before I take a new job, I'm going to have to answer some of the questions the book has me asking, like:

  • Will I be working with talented software craftsmen?
  • Will I be given the opportunity to apprentice under them?
  • Will I be given the opportunity to mentor?

I've seen managers who would answer "Yes!" to all three questions while thinking "Well, that new kid seems smart, and you might work with him occasionally, and mentoring is just being available to answer questions, when we're not busy trying to make money, argh, just sign the contract.", though, so more importantly:

  • Can the company answer these questions honestly and accurately?
  • How can I answer these questions myself?

Anyway, if it's not already on your book list, I highly recommend it.

Happy New Year!

Colin
