Hong Kong, Toronto, Home Office
Hmm, haven't updated the blog for a while.
Our trip to Hong Kong was amazing.
Our move to Toronto was scary and stressful, but ultimately successful. In spite of numerous challenges, everything arrived on time, we didn't lose or break anything, we got our utilities hooked up, and we're almost completely moved in.
I'm still working for the same company, as a remote employee, from my cozy home office. I'm still making Saskatoon money, but it's good to have at least one thing in our lives that isn't changing, and it means I can be home to get utilities hooked up, accept deliveries, get groceries and cleaning supplies, unpack, clean, do laundry, etc. It feels a bit weird to not have coworkers, and I'm not sure how well I'll be able to focus during the day (will I start watching Oprah and eating chocolates?), but I'm sure I'll get used to it. If any of you have been self-employeed, worked from home, worked remotely, been an author, etc, I'd love to hear your suggestions on how to stay focused and deal with isolation. If any of you are in the greater Toronto area, I'd love to hear from you too.

I stay focused by watching porn on my second monitor... ;)
Congratulations on your successful move Colin! Glad to see you're doing well and still blogging. I stay focused by having plenty to do. The hard part was when things slowed down a bit. I tried to stay focus by working on my personal code library, reading up on stuff.
But I found the best way to keep occupied is to do something, so I started an Open Source project. But now I just landed a second contract so I'll be very busy.
When I was working, it was easy to stay focused. THe work was interesting. AND, keep a strict schedule! I'm in the office by 9AM (roughly). Lunch at Noon. Back to work at 1PM. Done around 6:30. Maybe a bit more at night if necessary.
Keep the schedule very strict, then make sure to really enjoy it when you deviate the schedule because, hey! You work from home!
